How to share a vehicle with a buyer without giving away your margin

Forwarding the original photos leaks three things you would never say aloud: what you paid, who you bought it from, and their phone number. What belongs in a listing, and what never should.

Most enquiries now begin on a phone. A buyer asks for details, and the quickest thing to do is forward what you already have: the photographs the previous owner sent, the details as they were entered, sometimes the whole record.

That habit leaks three things you would never say out loud.

What belongs in a listing

  • Clear photographs of the car as it stands today, not as it arrived
  • Make, model, variant, year, fuel, transmission, kilometres and colour
  • Condition notes you are willing to stand behind in person
  • Your asking price, or no price at all if you would rather talk first

What never should

  • What you paid for the car
  • Who you bought it from, and their phone number
  • Any previous owner's name, address or documents
  • Internal notes about what the car needs or the figure you will really take

The reason is not only margin, although margin is reason enough. Passing on a previous owner's name and number is somebody else's personal information travelling through a forward you cannot recall. It ends up in group chats. Occasionally it ends up with someone calling the previous owner to ask what the car really sold for.

Care does not scale

Dealers who know all this still slip, because the discipline has to hold at nine at night on a phone with a buyer waiting. Screenshots get cropped badly. The wrong photo gets attached. Somebody sends the whole PDF.

A purpose-built buyer card solves it structurally. It can only contain the buyer-facing fields, so there is nothing to remember to strip out. In AutoPro91 you share a vehicle as an image or a PDF: photographs, specifications, asking price, and you choose whether the price appears at all. Your cost, the seller's identity and every owner contact detail stay in your account.

The test is simple. If the card were forwarded on to five other people, which is what actually happens, would anything on it embarrass you or cost you money? If not, send it.
